ADSL subscriptions for companies to be replaced with newer technology

Elisa has decided to completely discontinue the use of ADSL technology by the end of 2023. We have been using ADSL for different internet subscriptions for decades, but its technical capability is not sufficient for future needs and speed requirements.

We are therefore now directing our customers to newer technologies that will ensure better network connectivity in the future.

The change of ADSL subscriptions is taking place in stages. In 2020, we stopped selling new ADSL subscriptions and started dismantling the ADSL network one region at a time. However, there is no need to worry about this change – we will inform every customer using ADSL well in advance. We will find a replacement solution that will suit ADSL customers best.

We will discuss replacement solutions with customers, and the customer will always make the final decision on the solution to be chosen. In other words, nothing will be changed without the customer’s consent.

Q&A and instructions

Information on new options

Elisa offers several technical options to replace ADSL. The options depend on the technical availability of services and the distribution network of the property. Explore new technology options and ask our sales people for more information!

Replacing ADSL with mobile

1) Replacing ADSL with mobile

  • The average mobile network connection is significantly faster than an ADSL connection. For example, with 4G technology, speeds are many times higher than ADSL, and the new 5G technology is still many times faster than 4G.
  • Elisa’s high-quality 4G network already covers more than 99 per cent of Finland, and we are rapidly expanding Elisa’s 5G network throughout the country. See Elisa’s coverage map for your area.
  • Elisa’s wide range of offerings includes subscriptions, devices, additional antennas and other necessary mobile solutions. We offer everything as a complete service to customers who especially value ease of use.

Replacing ADSL with fibre

2) Replacing ADSL with fibre

  • The fastest possible connection to replace ADSL is a fibre optic connection.
  • The compatibility of the property’s internal network with the new fibre optic relationship must be confirmed in advance by the property owner. Through Elisa’s Onsite service, an Elisa expert can do this job for you.
  • If you are interested in a fibre optic connection, please contact our corporate sales office. Together, we will determine whether there is an existing fibre optic connection at the operating point or whether a completely new one could be built.

Replacing ADSL with a cable modem

3) Replacing ADSL with a cable modem

  • A cable modem is faster than an ADSL connection.
  • It is mainly available for residential apartments in houses with Elisa cable TV services.
  • Elisa’s solution includes everything you need: a subscription and an indoor router service.

Replacing ADSL with VDSL technology

4) Replacing ADSL with VDSL technology

  • VDSL technology uses telephone cables in the same way as ADSL. However, VDSL has the advantage of faster connections and the reliability of newer technology.
  • VDSL is suitable when Elisa’s VDSL is available in the area.
  • When you want more reliability and fault tolerance in your VDSL connection, we recommend using hybrid solutions. In this case, you will receive a mobile connection alongside the VDSL connection. In our corporate network services (Netti Plus, Elisa Yritysverkko), you can add a 4G backup connection supplementary service to your VDSL connection.

Checklist for different subscriptions:

What to consider in Netti Lite broadband

Router:

  • When a subscription’s technology changes, we usually also have to replace the customer’s router. We will send you a new suitable router according to the selected technology.
  • It is advisable to place the new router in a central location to ensure maximum indoor WiFi coverage.

Internet-connected devices:

  • When the router changes, so does the wireless network and its identifying data (network name and WiFi password). Therefore, you need to connect your device to a new WiFi network.
  • Be sure to tell the salesperson if you have a payment terminal, a shared network printer, a shared network drive, or another connected device. If the connection is for critical business use, we have a selection of suitable controlled and managed connections.
  • If a payment terminal or other broadband-connected device requires device programming, it is advisable to agree with your supplier in time on changing the subscription. Elisa is not responsible for these costs, because it is not the provider of the same services.

Need help with setting up or settings?

  • Elisa’s installation service guarantees you easy internet access. We recommend the installation service for commercial properties in particular.
  • If your premises is on more than one floor, or if your building has stone walls, WiFi coverage can be a problem. Fortunately, we have various solutions for improving indoor WiFi coverage.
  • Elisa Yritysguru helps in solving technical challenges and also supports setup.

What to consider in corporate network services

The following advice applies to Elisa Yritysverkko, Netti Plus and Yritysinternet subscriptions.

Updating settings

  • Fixed public IP addresses for internet subscriptions can be transferred to a new subscription.
  • Key settings for corporate network interfaces, i.e. client private IP addresses and Multi-VPN configurations, can be transferred to the new subscription.

Internal networks

  • Internal networks are the customer’s responsibility. In the case of fibre optic connections, a single-mode fibre connection must be available on the internal network. If the fibre optic connection is implemented through a property switch that is part of Elisa’s Yrityskiinteistökuitu concept, the cabling (fibre or data cabling) required for the type of property switch in question must be available on the internal network.

Things to consider when switching to mobile:

  • Quality of Service (QoS) cannot be transferred to mobile-based interfaces.
  • We recommend that the customer carry out a speed test on Elisa’s SIM-powered smartphone at the planned installation location. If the test result is unsatisfactory, you should contact Elisa.

Elisa helps to ensure security

  • When changing subscriptions, you should also check the security situation. For example, public IP addresses on the Netti Plus subscription are fully open to the public internet unless they are protected by a firewall. Elisa’s centralised firewall service is an easy and inexpensive solution for data security.
  • In addition, Elisa’s experts help with change projects. Check out our expert services and ask more!

Additional considerations for all subscription types:

Although new technology provides faster internet access, old devices may not offer the best power. For example, if your computer is ageing, it can’t run the internet as fast as it should.

It is therefore worth checking whether it is also time to upgrade to other newer technologies as well. Elisa offers a comprehensive range of powerful equipment for work. Explore and order conveniently online:
